Diddy, P. Diddy, Puffy, Puff Daddy, the multiple aliases of Sean Combs are leaving with the hip-hop mogul from Atlantic Records and taking Bad Boy with him. His destination is Universal Music Group’s Interscope Geffen A&M label. This shift will create a new shared venture with Interscope and Bad Boy. This deal willcover all of his future albums including the latest “Last Train to Paris.”
The announcement came through Jimmy Iovine, the chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, who stated in a press release, “Puff is a rare person in the music industry today, that can move the culture in many areas-fashion, TV, music-as well as making records. Whenever a free agent like him comes along, which is rare, you grab him.”
Diddy replied, “I am excited to be partnering with Jimmy Iovine and the Interscope family on all my future music ventures which include my career as a recording artist and upcoming record label. With this new deal, I look forward to signing music’s next great superstars to the label and continuing the legacy of making great music at my new home. This is the beginning of a new musical era for Bad Boy.”
This may come as the relief Diddy has needed since the early 2000s marked the descent of Bad Boy’s prominence in the industry. They seemed to experience a small resurgence with the success of “Making the Band,” which produced Da Band (remember them?), Day 26, Cassie, Yung Joc, and the currently defunct Danity Kane who saw success with two number one albums.
“Last Train to Paris” is set to be released November 24th with the new single “Love Come Down” and its video to be directed by Rage. It’s clear Interscope hopes to take one of Time Magazine’s voted “Most Influential Businessman in the World,” and add to their extensive hip-hop roster that includes labels, such as Death Row, G-Unit Records, and Shady Records.
Diddy is quite excited over the move and his new album stating, “The train is coming…it’s coming, it’s coming. Right now, it’s like Jay-Z time and Drake time. Enjoy those guys. But, the train is coming. Get your ticket. You don’t want to be left out.”
